Mom entrepreneurs, often called mompreneurs, are mothers who choose to launch their businesses while bringing up children. Many of these moms gave up corporate jobs – some even in leadership positions – to become a mother and then embrace maternity with entrepreneurship. Raising children and running a business simultaneously may sound simple, but combining these extraordinarily complicated and delicate roles can be a consuming and stressful lifestyle. Luckily, several examples of women have accomplished the balance of family matriarch and home-business manager.

Here we shall talk about eight such successful mom entrepreneurs who inspire all women desiring to start their business while caregiving and looking after their children.

Julie Aigner-Clark, The Baby Einstein Company

Julie Aigner-Clark, a stay-at-home mom and former teacher founded The Baby Einstein Company at her home in suburban Alpharetta, Georgia, in 1997. Julie and her husband invested $18,000 from their savings to produce the initial product, a Video Board Book, titled Baby Einstein, later sold as Language Nursery. The couple saw the opportunity to develop products that help in the intellectual development of a child from an early age. Baby Einstein grew revenues from $1 million in 1998 to over $10 million in 2000, and The Walt Disney Company acquired the business for an undisclosed amount the following in 2001. Julie has since been building a few start-ups, is a remarkable speaker, and has her website, Mommymade.com.

Nicole Gleeson, Little Mizz Kit

Little Mizz Kit was recently founded by Nicole Gleeson, a serial entrepreneur, and mother of two. While in high school and college, Nicole launched several businesses, worked in corporate America, and then realized her vision by launching this brand. Little Mizz Kit offers a monthly practical activity kit founded on five specific pillars, including life lessons, nutrition, fitness, how-to’s, and arts and crafts, intending to inspire creativity and confidence in girls from an early age. Kits can comprise everything from lessons in etiquette and fun dance routines to recipes for nutritious snacks.

Kimber Christensen, Little Sapling Toys

Kimber Christensen started with a small shop on Etsy. She and her husband Nick made and sold the Little Sapling developmental wooden toys. As the couple has a home office and workshop onsite, they can spend more time with their two children. Little Sapling Toys are made of natural products and packaged with recycled supplies. These toys are a hit among health and safety-conscious parents. On the Etsy Blog, Kimber and Nick talk more about their business and life as work-at-home parents.

Sarah Davis, FashionPhile.com

Sarah Davis, a mom-of-four, took her love for handbags to the next level by offering gently-used, high-end purses and bags via her online store. She left her law career and has found success with her creative business – FashionPhile.com. Recently, Sarah was featured in a Real Mom profile in Working Mother magazine, where she disclosed that, worldwide, her site has bags sold worth $4.5 million in a year.

Stacy DeBroff, Mom Central Consulting

While Stacy DeBroff was working as a spokesperson for brands Johnson & Johnson, Ragu, Hasbro, Baby Einstein, and others, she realized the power that moms hold in the marketing field. She created Mom Central Consulting in 2007 to help brands communicate effectively with the average mom. Stacy is a mother of two teenagers and, at the same time, oversees the social media campaigns that connect her brand clients and thousands of real moms.

Sheila Lirio Marcelo, Care.com

Sheila Lirio Marcelo was inspired to establish Care.com to solve a problem that was not just her own. Sheila was a young mother with two small children who found it challenging to avail herself of quality childcare solutions. She knew there must be a better way than using the phone book or asking the neighbors if they knew a good sitter. Sheila founded Care.com in 2006, and the company is the largest online care destination in the world today, with more than 10.7 million members across 16 countries. This mom entrepreneur also founded WomenUp.org to enhance women’s roles in the global economy by providing leadership training, mentorship, and support to girls and women.

Erin Chase, The $5 Dinner Mom

Erin Chase, a mom of three, shared her journey to create delicious meals that can be prepared by spending less than $5. Today, Erin is a famous author. By offering tips for getting more groceries for less and hints for upping the appeal factor of familiar dishes, she has earned rave reviews for both her blog and cookbook, “The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook.” Whether you are looking for something simple, like pulled pork sandwiches or a delicious bacon-wrapped apple chicken dish, she has shown that there is a meal you can make for just five bucks – for your entire family.

 Laura Berg, My Smart Hands

As parents strive to communicate with their children early, baby sign language holds great importance. Thanks to the teachers at Laura Berg’s company, My Smart Hands, parents can learn American sign language, in person or online, to communicate with infants and the hard of hearing. Laura was quick to embrace technology in her entrepreneurship as the ‘My Smart Hands’ baby sign language app on iPhone has been well-received among tech-savvy moms and caregivers. This mom entrepreneur’s passion for teaching has spread worldwide.

It takes all kinds of moms to create and sustain the brilliant businesses featured here. And with the future constantly revealing new markets, there is room for many more mompreneurs. In the end, few things are better than those made by a mom.
