According to a recent study by the Content Marketing Institute, 91% of B2B marketers use content marketing to reach customers, and 86% of B2C marketers consider content marketing a key strategy for their business. However, with so many businesses vying for consumers’ attention, creating a brand that stands out in a crowded marketplace can be challenging. This is where the expertise of marketing and branding professionals, such as Lee Ashby Watts, becomes essential.

With over 20 years of experience in the industry, Lee has developed a unique approach to branding that centers around the power of storytelling. Lee, the founder of ashby & watts consulting, helps clients craft compelling brand messages that resonate with their target audience and communicate them effectively across multiple channels.

A Surprising Career Path from Law to Branding

Lee has had a unique journey into the world of marketing and branding. Lee’s original plan was to attend law school, but she decided to take a detour and work in a law firm to gain some exposure to law firm life. However, Lee quickly realized she did not enjoy her role at the firm and was preparing to quit. Then, Lee spoke to the HR department about her intentions to leave, and they informed her of a marketing position being formed within the firm.

Marketing for law firms, especially in Big Law, was just starting to grow at the time, and Lee was fascinated by the potential of this field. She began working in legal marketing and learned as much as possible. Lee was fortunate to have amazing mentors, and she also took on roles in professional associations, which helped her to build her network. As Lee learned more about marketing, she also discovered the importance of branding, specifically personal branding. Through her journey in legal marketing, Lee found her passion for branding and decided to pursue a career in this field.

A Unique Approach to Marketing and Branding

ashby & watts consulting is a marketing and branding firm committed to helping business leaders develop clear and sustainable marketing, branding, and business development strategies. The firm’s services are designed to help clients share their brand stories, create impact, and grow revenue through various frameworks.

The company’s clients include several law firms, attorneys, and professionals working in the legal industry. ashby & watts consulting also represents a coaching certification company, a publishing company, and a few non-profits. Lee enjoys working with growing companies and high-achieving professionals, helping them to differentiate themselves from their competitors and establish credibility.

Lee firmly believes that emotional connection is crucial in branding. As Lee says, “People buy stories, not logos. People are drawn to emotions, not simply a great ad. It is important to understand your story and know how your clients want to hear it.” For Lee, connecting with consumers on a deeper emotional level enhances the sense of loyalty and trust, leading to long-term customer engagement. With this philosophy in mind, ashby & watts consulting focuses on messaging, the client journey, and telling the story of the brand to help clients connect with their target audience.

Personal Branding in the Modern World

Personal branding has become increasingly important in today’s digital age, where competition is fierce, and standing out from the crowd is essential. According to Lee, personal branding is critical in growing your influence as a leader or business owner. It helps establish credibility, differentiates you from competitors, leads to opportunities, and can build a loyal network of referrals and clients.

In the modern-day world, personal branding is no longer just an option, but a necessity. As Lee points out, “Your personal brand is what sets you apart from others; it makes you unique and authentic. It is what people remember about you.” Personal branding helps you communicate your values, expertise, and unique qualities to your target audience, creating a strong and lasting impression.

For women who want to start their own businesses, Lee advises investing in personal branding and networking before launching the business. According to Lee, relationships are key to a successful business, and building a strong personal brand is essential to developing those relationships. “Don’t wait until you start your business to invest in those relationships and develop your personal brand,” says Lee. Her journey shows that unexpected detours can lead to incredible opportunities, and staying open to new experiences and possibilities is important.
