No one expected the global coronavirus pandemic when it hit. It came and changed the world completely. It shattered everything, from our health to the education system, to the economy. Lives were lost and means of livelihood gone.

But hairdresser Evelyn Metellus was a bit lucky. Although her business was hit hard, she did not lose hope completely and has now found a way to give back to her community and help other women who have suffered.

1. Who’s Evelyn Metellus?

Evelyn is an artist with a vision. She is the CEO and lead stylist of the prestigious European and Afro hairdressing salon Exotic Hair Creation & Supply Inc. She combines experience, artistry, and technique in a career that spans over two decades and has gained the reputation as South Florida’s most sought-after stylist.

She left her nursing job more than twenty years ago and found her passion in helping others bring out their true beauty so they can look and feel their best. She completed a cosmetology degree and set up her first salon Hair Creations by Evelyn, which has now metamorphosed into a global brand, all the while without sacrificing the commitment to stellar customer service.

Located in the magnificent Cobblestone Village right inside the beautiful Royal Palm Village, Exotic Hair Creation boasts a state-of-the-art hairdressing facility with highly skilled stylists all ready to make you your very best.

2. Why did Evelyn start her business?

Evelyn said that “on April 1, 1995, I opened my first beauty salon in Fort Lauderdale. I was a nurse at the time, however, my passion was always beauty. One day a patient of mine blessed me with the gift of paying my tuition for beauty school, because I would always visit her and do her hair and make-up, for free, while she was in the hospital.” She loves making women look and feel beautiful, especially the ones suffering from hair loss.

3. How small businesses can stay open during the COVID-19 pandemic

Many small businesses are struggling in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, but they need a way to stay afloat. Some short tips to achieve this are: taking advantage of resources provided by the government and other financial institutions, making a three-month financial plan, upskilling their staff, and reviewing their business model to be in tune with current realities.

4. How to support your community during the pandemic

The pandemic has mainly dealt a blow to individuals, not just businesses. People now feel helpless and are desperately looking for help. That help can come from you, even
by just checking up on them, or going further, by giving them the little you can afford like money, food, clothes, or masks or other personal protective equipment. You can donate blood or use your skills to help out, just like Evelyn does. It will go a long way in cushioning the effects of the pandemic on your community.

Why it is important for small business owners to work together during times of hardship

COVID-19 has proved that no man is an island. That is why it is important for small business owners to work together, as it will help them take their businesses to a whole new level. They will be inspired, grow their network, learn from one another, and find solutions to their problems. It is a win-win situation.

5. Why are referrals important?

With the term “referrals,” I mean recommending the services or products
of someone else. It is one of the most effective marketing strategies available, better than others like inbound marketing, email campaigns, and pay-per-click ads.
It requires no financial investment and brings invaluable leads. Evelyn says most of her clients are through referrals because of her excellent service delivery.

6. Evelyn’s advice for women wanting to start a business

Nothing is easy in life. Just like a baby, you must crawl before you can walk. Be strong and courageous and never give up, because there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

7. How Evelyn helps women grow back their hair after chemotherapy and gives back to her community

Evelyn can help women grow back their hair after chemotherapy; this is what she does every week. She’s confident that she can help her clients and is now getting ready to help her new client, someone who’s “gonna lose all her hair. I am preparing to make a wig for her and that gives her hope because she knows that I know what she likes. I cannot wait to help her grow her hair back after chemotherapy.”

Evelyn is also aware of what people are going through and is ready to give back
to her community. A percentage of her proceeds goes to charity because there are “so many people suffering from hair loss and I want to be able to help them be their best self.”

Her nonprofit also creates hairpieces for those suffering from hair loss, from cancer to alopecia or for any other reason, to make them feel good about themselves, and she donates them to “anyone suffering from hair loss whether it is cancer or any other issue.”

8. Evelyn’s five tips for women trying to grow back their hair after chemo

Evelyn is giving out the following five tips to the women out there who have undergone chemotherapy, to help them grow back their hair:

1. Eat protein: Eat foods rich in protein, as protein is an important nutrient for the hair. Some protein-rich foods you can include in your diet are meat, eggs, and milk.

2. Include Inositol: Inositol is a carbohydrate that can help your hair growth by improving the functioning of scalp cells. Inositol sources are nuts, whole grains, and leafy vegetables.

3. Take vitamins and minerals: Vitamins and minerals can stimulate your hair growth after chemotherapy.

4. Use essential oils: Apply essential oils like bergamot or ylang-ylang directly to your hair and massage your scalp. They are known to improve hair regrowth after chemo.

5. Take fatty acids: Fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, and foods rich in fatty acids such as herring fish, salmon fish, and flax seeds help regrow your hair after chemo.

No matter the condition of your hair, Evelyn believes you can be helped. If you have recently lost your hair due to cancer or something else, she is always ready to help you grow it back. She can even give you free hairpieces to make it happen. If you want to buy hair accessories, she can also provide that.

Regardless of your hair type, be it curly, thick, fine, or straight, she has the creative talent and truly exceptional skills to help you look and feel amazing. No wonder she is called the Exotic Hair Doctor.
